Here at LB Hand Therapy, we will make (or fabricate) a custom orthosis or splint according to your doctor’s orders. Here are a few tips to help you care for yours!
First and foremost, wear your splint according to the schedule your doctor and/or therapist have laid out! Your therapist will give you instructions for when to wear your splint. These instructions are to help you achieve the best result possible.
Another important thing to note is that custom made splints melt in high temperatures. This means that you want to make sure that you do not leave the splint in a hot car, or in direct sunlight for extended periods of time, and do not put it in the dishwasher to clean it.
To clean your custom splint, you will start by taking off the soft velcro straps, but leave the rough velcro attached. The rough velcro will dry just fine. Take the splint and wash it in cool water with soft scrub. Soft scrub will remove any odors from the plastic, but you must be very thorough when you rinse the splint, as soft scrub can irritate the skin.
The final important thing to remember about your splint? Pay attention to areas that rub or pinch and tell your therapist about them! We know that it is not going to be your favorite thing to wear your splint as often as you need to, but if we can make it more comfortable, we will! Telling us where your splint pinches or rubs can help us truly customize your splint to you, and also help us make better, more comfortable splints for all our patients.
