Core is basically another term for your abdominal and back muscles that hold you upright. We here at LB Hand Therapy wanted to do a blog about the importance of your core because you are constantly using these muscles!
Why Are Core Muscles Important?
All motion begins at the pelvis, including arm motion. So why is strengthening the core so important?
First of all, strengthening your core can improve your posture both standing and sitting, leading to a decrease in arm, neck, and back pain. By keep your core strong, it takes the strain off your arms and legs. This allows your other muscles to do what they were intended to do. We especially see this in patients with shoulder issues.
This leads us to our second point. Strengthening your core can improve your shoulder function. Once your core is stable, you typically have fewer issues strengthening your shoulder. Our therapists always add core exercises to your home program to help with shoulder range of motion.
Often times when our patients try to move their arms overhead, their painful shoulder muscles take the brunt and are unable to get the arm up. By connecting your shoulder movement to the core (by way of your shoulder blade) your rotator cuff and other shoulder muscles don’t have to do as much work. In turn, they hurt less!
